By this time Ingeborg Kálnoky was really anxious about her husband. She had heard nothing of him for about a year. Of course life was very eventful and varied in the Witness House, so she did not have much time for brooding. Now and then, however, she wondered whether he was still alive. One of the U.S. officers had obtained permission for her to make a phone call to Budapest, which was not easy. The Hungarian capital was in the zone of Russian occupation, and the Cold War, although at first it was hardly perceptible outside that zone, had already begun. The conversation had to be conducted through an intermediary. Kálnoky gave him three numbers, two of which turned out not to be in operation any more. The third number was now that of an office of the Soviet military government. The man who answered the call spoke Russian, and it was useless trying to talk to him.

A few days later, Ingeborg Kálnoky was at her easel in the study when the phone rang. The next moment Elise Krülle came running in. The countess must come, quick, she said, it was a call from abroad. Perhaps from Hungary? Kálnoky sprinted to the phone in the hall. At first there was only crackling on the line, and then suddenly she heard Father Flynn’s voice. He was in Rome, the priest shouted into the receiver, and then he was waxing enthusiastic: “A wonderful city!”

Elise Krülle and the other women who kept the household running soon found out who had been calling from Rome. After that, they always claimed that Father Flynn had been summoned to the Pope because of his improper liaison with the countess.
